Your toolkit for credit and money in the United States
Pick what you need to do and we give you the route: what to do first, the tool that runs the numbers and the guide that explains it.
What do you need to do?

Building credit from zero
With no history you cannot be scored. You need an account that reports to the bureaus and about six months of on-time payments.
- 6 months
- until your first FICO score
- 35%
- of a FICO score is paying on time
- 1-10%
- utilization of high scores
- Open a bank accountIt is the step that decides whether anyone says yes.
- Get your first line of creditA secured card or authorized user: both report from month one.
- Use it lightly and pay in fullOne small expense, autopay and a balance under 10% at closing.
- Check your free reportMake sure your payments show up and fix any error.
Your first credit card
With no history, the most reliable card is a secured one and the fastest route is becoming an authorized user. Apply for one and wait.
- $200-500
- typical secured card deposit
- 1
- application at a time: each is a hard inquiry
- 0
- effect of pre-qualifying on your score
- Check the requirements18+, a US address, an SSN or ITIN and income to report.
- Pre-qualify risk-freeIt is a soft inquiry: your score is untouched.
- Fill in the application carefullyName and address exactly as on your documents.
- If declined, read the letterIt says why and which bureau was checked. Fix that before reapplying.
Starting without a Social Security number
You can build credit without an SSN. The ITIN opens the door to accounts, secured cards and history, but the order matters.
- W-7
- IRS form to apply for an ITIN
- 3 steps
- in order: ITIN, account and card
- Apply for an ITINThe IRS issues it and it works as your tax ID.
- Open an account without an SSNWith a passport or consular ID and your ITIN, at banks that accept it.
- Get a card with your ITINA secured card is the route that works best.
- Wait out the six monthsOn-time payments and low balances until your first score.
Credit and banking with an ITIN
With an ITIN you can have an account, a card and a history, but not at every bank. Ask whether they accept it before applying.
- 3
- bureaus your card should report to
- 6 months
- until your first FICO score
- Pick a bank that accepts the ITINAlso ask whether you must apply at a branch.
- Get a card with your ITINIdeally secured, from a bank or credit union that reports to all three bureaus.
- Decide how much to deposit$300 to $500 is the comfortable range for most people.
- Compare newcomer optionsSome accept a passport or your home-country history.
Sending money home for less
The real cost is the fee plus the exchange rate margin. Compare what arrives, not the advertised fee.
- 2 costs
- fee and exchange rate margin
- 1%
- federal tax on cash-funded transfers since 2026
- Work out the real costEnter what two providers offer and see what arrives.
- Compare your countryWhat it really costs to send to each destination.
- Pay from an account or card, not cashThe 1% tax only applies to transfers funded with cash or similar.
Guides by country
Opening your first bank account
You can open an account without an SSN. What decides it is the documents you bring and the fees you accept.
- $0
- monthly fee if you pick the right account
- 4
- papers worth bringing to the appointment
- Gather your documentsTick below what you already have.
- Choose bank, credit union or digital accountEach accepts different things and charges differently.
- Avoid the monthly feeWhich conditions waive it and where fees hide.
- Turn off overdraftIt is the fee that hurts most when you start.
What they will ask for
Fixing a credit problem

- I was declined for a cardRead the decline letter before applying again.
- There is an error on my reportDispute it for free: the bureau has 30 days to investigate.
- My score droppedA high balance, a late payment or closing a card are the usual causes.
- I owe a lot on my cardSee when you finish and how much you save paying more than the minimum.
- I do not know what my report saysYou can see it free every week at AnnualCreditReport.com.

Where to start
Building credit, opening a bank account or sending money home should not require reading the small print of ten different providers. Every guide here explains what it actually costs, what you need, and what to watch out for.
No Social Security number needed to get started, and no jargon. If a guide does not tell you something useful, it should not be here.
